Bill will be undertaking another tour this year, beginning on July 13th in Dunedin, taking in Christchurch, Nelson and Auckland before ending in Wellington on July 22nd.

The Buildermash EP was a collaboration with several musicians including The Ghosts, Simon Joyner, David Nance, Steve Cournane, Chris Deden, Stuart Page, Andrew McCully and Pete Scott.

The 2016 tour of NZ was documented by filmmaker Simon Ogston (The Skeptics film Sheen of Gold, Squirm, Rumble & Bang (with Jeff Smith), Gone With The Weird, Antarctic Angels). Some shows are being planned for July and August 2017 to chime in with the launch of Simon Ogston (with Jeff Smith again on this one)'s feature length documentary.

Steve Cournane, Grieg Bainbridge, with special reunions with Derek Champion (Bilders 1990-94) in Wellington, Andrew McCully (Bilders 2007-2008) and Stuart Page (Above Ground and Builders 1983-present), Steve Cogle, Peter Stapleton, Malcolm Grant, Grant McDonagh, members of Ferocious and many more, greatly valued friends took part in the reunion tour. Most if not all guests will appear in the film.

The Ferocious Project was completed at Pyramid Club, April 7-9 2016 with Mark Williams on guitar, Jo Contag on Drums and Bill D on words with additions from R.A.K. Mason, Robert Burns and Anonymous (13th century). Mark has been gathering the material for our own DIY mixing and mastering after an application for a NZ mix 'n master grant was turned down. Looking forward to that in 2017.

For a no bullshit summary of Direen career from garage &punk to lo-fi through theatre and out the other side to the no-star present. Dynamite Hemorrhage hard copy magazine.

Watch for: a "gaelic-folky" offering on the Robert Burns compilation from Euro-kiwi Zelle Records & Dunedin Music.com.

Recent gigs: Dunedin: Readings and music with debate. Solo workout at Auckland Audio Foundation. Reunion of 1985 Bilders the following night. A Dunedin one-off with Robbie Yeats & Greig Bainbridge. Solo spot at Instants Chavirés Paris aiding & abetting Australian friends from Mad Nana.

Album Flavour of the Meat with Hamish Kilgour, David Watson (bagpipes, 335) and Miggy Littleton has pleased many. It was part of a subscription series of four but single copies can be had. (Grapefruit Records).

UNWUCHT's 12" re-releases admired for careful quality production of archival recordings. A Democrazy bootleg of live recordings 1982-83 has been snatched up. More from Unwucht in the pipes.

Two Siltbreeze Vacuum 7 inches generated plenty interest in the USA.

Sales of CDs (2006-2010) have come to an end, definitively.

<< "The Utopians" was among our Top Ten most played records on KDVS 90.3 FM in Davis, CA  (#1). >>

"MESS AND NOISE http://messandnoise.com/articles/4669060 – ... the acidic hilarity of ‘The Utopians R Just Out Boozin’’. It’s cranky and fuzzy .... The spoken-word vocals of ‘Mardy’ and the noisy live recording ‘C.B.A.Z.Y. Extract’ are just as interesting, while the former even has a sneaky pop sweetness. Direen’s live-wire volatility always comes across loud and clear, no matter the collaborators or musical setting."

Grapefruit released a surprise album of songs recorded in Brooklyn by Direen, Hamish Kilgour, Miggy Littletton and David Watson. Check it out here. http://grapefruitrecordclub.com/products/bill-direen-the-hat-the-flavour-of-the-meat
